Pugh + Scarpa was commissioned by Los Angeles Trade-Technical College (LATTC) to undertake a thorough renovation, repair and modernization of existing 1960’s Buildings G and J on the LATTC campus. Building G houses the College’s basketball gymnasium and associated facilities. Building J holds the College’s Physical Education Department and fitness center. Both buildings will undergo significant interior and exterior renovation and upgrades. The project is part of the District’s Proposition A Building Program and will comply with—and exceed—the District’s Sustainable Standards.
From the beginning, the college wished to enhance the aesthetics of these buildings, but did not think that their budget would allow it due to the large amount of essential infrastructure upgrades the buildings needed. Pugh + Scarpa was able to propose innovative ways of using the existing structures to provide the required upgrades with significant cost savings. This allowed a portion of the funding to be reallocated towards a new façade treatment that will wrap the entire complex, visually unifying the buildings and the pool between. Passive solar strategies and other sustainable tactics were employed wherever possible at low or no cost to the client. In fact, some even contribute to the cost-effectiveness of the project; for instance, increased natural daylighting and improved passive ventilation reduced load requirements on electrical and mechanical systems, allowing for downsized equipment and associated costs.
